3RD GRADE, EDGEWATER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, EDGEWATER, COLORADO

Young Composers Playground program came to Edgewater Elementary School in 2014 and 2015. Third grade students wrote a story and composed music to accompany their story. The program culminates in a performance. During this performance, Edgewater students take turns narrating and acting scenes from the story (the very scenes that they composed for).

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

We are proud of this Young Composers Playground project because we were able to incorporate students’ acting and narration of their story. Our students love to act and express themselves this way, and acting was a highlight for them. We couldn’t have done the acting without the help of a skilled student-teacher, who assisted on the stage and in rehearsals.

Some wonderful musical moments occur in this work. In the video you’ll notice the expressive and creepy lumbering bear music, in which instruments play simultaneously. The student composers utilized some of the special techniques that the instruments could use, and they also were successful with composing for multiple instruments simultaneously.

Next, notice that the composers used found-sound, crinkling paper, to express a moment in the story.

TIP: Throughout the process, encourage students to explore musical boundaries in order to express the story.
